Middle Row, Holborn

During the Regency period Holborn was second only to the Strand as the leading thoroughfare in London. The section of it depicted here was one of the widest parts of the street, and as it was close to the Inns of Court it was one of its busiest sections. Holborn was first paved in 1417 by order of Henry V who noted that it was then so mired in mud that it presented many perils and hazards.
