      Cornhill
and Lombard Street, from the Poultry

        Cornhill
is so-called because it was anciently a market for corn (grain). The
"picturesque view presented here to the eye of the passenger, by
a combination of architectural splendour, in the Tower of the Royal
Exchange, the beautiful tower of St
Michael, Cornhill, and the numerous spires of churches in the surrounding
neighbourhood." Lombard street was so called because it was once
the residence of Lombards (northern Italians), the great money lenders
of medieval times, until Queen Elizabeth I expelled them from the country.
