The New Opening to St Martin in the Fields Church

St Martin's was sometimes known as the royal parish church as so many royals were christened here (e.g. Charles II). During Henry II's reign there was a small chapel on the site, and by the twelfth century a proper church had replaced it. The church in the engraving is the one designed by James Gibbs and built between 1722 and 1726. It shows the frontage as it appeared after roadworks in the early nineteenth century opened up the view.
