Stow (John Strype, editor),
Survey of the Cities of London and Westminster
Churchill et al, London, 1720, 2 volumes
John
Stow first published his Survey of London in 1598. It
has rarely been out of print since. In 1720 John Strype revised
and edited the work, adding vast amounts of detail, and contained
maps and plans of the city and immediate surrounding parishes,
many of which have been attributed to Richard Blome.
This
edition of Stow's survey has become the classic edition, and much
sought after - mainly for the exquisite detail of the maps which
enable us to get our first good glimpse into the twisting alleyways
and streets of early eighteenth-century London. Over the coming
months we will gradually add more of the maps from the 1720 edition
of Stow.
Some
of the maps are so large they will be broken down into sections.
